How to test your ping
To test your ping, measure the round-trip time for a small request to reach a server and come back. Under 50 ms is excellent, 50โ100 ms is fine, and over 150 ms will feel laggy.
Step by step
- 1Run a ping test. Use the tool below โ it sends repeated requests and reports the round-trip time in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better.
- 2Take several readings. Watch the values over a few seconds. A steady number is healthy; numbers that jump around mean jitter, which causes stutter in calls and games.
- 3Test wired vs. Wi-Fi. Plug into the router with a cable and retest. If wired ping is much lower, your Wi-Fi is adding the lag.
- 4Close bandwidth-heavy apps. Downloads, streaming, and cloud backups inflate ping. Pause them and retest to see your true baseline.
- 5Compare against the command line. Run ping 1.1.1.1 in a terminal for a second opinion that bypasses the browser entirely.

Round-trip latency to our server

Averages 5 requests. Browser security prevents true ICMP ping, so this measures HTTP round-trip time โ a close, practical equivalent.
What the result means
Ping (latency) is the round-trip time in milliseconds for data to reach a server and return. Under 50 ms is excellent, 50โ100 ms is good, 100โ150 ms is noticeable, and above 150 ms feels laggy in real-time apps.
If the number is stable and low, your connection is responsive. Large swings between readings (jitter) are often worse than a slightly higher average, and usually point to Wi-Fi interference or a congested line.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good ping?
Under 50 ms is excellent and ideal for gaming and video calls. 50โ100 ms is good for everyday use. Over 150 ms will feel laggy in real-time applications.
Why is my ping so high?
Common causes are Wi-Fi interference, distance from the router, other devices using bandwidth, or a congested ISP connection. Testing on a wired connection usually lowers it.
Is ping the same as download speed?
No. Download speed is how much data you can move; ping is how quickly it responds. You can have fast speeds and still have high, laggy ping.
