How to fix high ping
To fix high ping, switch to a wired connection, stop background uploads and downloads, restart your router, and move closer to it or change Wi-Fi channel. Work through the fixes in order and retest after each one, so you know which change actually helped.
Step by step
- 1Measure your baseline first. Run the test below and note the average before you change anything. Without a baseline you can't tell which fix worked.
- 2Plug in an Ethernet cable. This is the single biggest fix. Wi-Fi commonly adds 10–40 ms and most of the jitter. If wired ping is good, everything below is about improving Wi-Fi.
- 3Stop anything uploading. Cloud backups, game updates, and video calls on other devices saturate your uplink and inflate ping far more than downloads do. Pause them and retest.
- 4Move closer to the router. Distance and walls cost latency. Test in the same room to see how much your usual spot is costing you — a 30 ms difference is common.
- 5Switch to the 5 GHz band. 2.4 GHz is crowded and slower to respond. If your router broadcasts both, connect to the 5 GHz network for lower and steadier ping over short distances.
- 6Restart the router. Power it off for 30 seconds. This clears the memory pressure and buffer bloat that build up over weeks of uptime and quietly raise latency.
- 7Change the Wi-Fi channel. In a flat or dense neighbourhood your router may share a channel with several others. Switching to a less crowded one in the router settings often removes ping spikes entirely.
- 8Turn off the VPN and retest. A VPN routes your traffic through an extra server and always adds latency — often 10–50 ms, more if the server is distant. If ping drops sharply without it, pick a closer VPN server.
- 9Check whether it's your provider. If wired ping is still high with nothing running, the problem is upstream. Check for an outage or congestion in your area before spending money on hardware.

What the result means
Fixes are listed by impact, not effort. Wired versus Wi-Fi and a saturated uplink account for most bad ping in homes, and both are free to test in under a minute. Buying a new router rarely helps if you haven't ruled those out first.
If your ping is fine when idle but spikes under load, that is bufferbloat: your router queues packets instead of dropping them, and latency balloons whenever the line is busy. Enabling Smart Queue Management or SQM/QoS in the router settings is the specific fix, and it can cut loaded ping by hundreds of milliseconds.
If wired ping is high with nothing running and no VPN, you've reached the limit of what you can fix. At that point it's your ISP's line, routing, or the distance to the server — worth reporting, not worth buying hardware for.

Does a VPN increase ping?
Yes, always, because your traffic takes a detour through the VPN server. A nearby server might add only 10 ms; one on another continent can add several hundred.
Will a new router lower my ping?
Only if your current one is the bottleneck — typically because it's very old, overloaded, or suffering from bufferbloat. If a wired connection already gives you good ping, a new router won't improve it.
Can I fix high ping on Wi-Fi without a cable?
